Whether you're a student looking for help with studying or a teacher writing mock exams, these questions should help.

One, two or all three essay questions in Paper 1, Section B will be based on the extension topics.

Biological Approach: Animal Research

Remember that the extension questions are created by combining the HL extension topics with the three topics in each of the approaches.

Biological extension topics: “The role of animal research in understanding human behaviour”

  • The value of animal models in psychological research
  • Whether animal research can provide insight into human behaviour
  • Ethical considerations in animal research

Biological approach topics:

  • Hormones and pheromones and behaviour
  • Genetics and behaviour

  1. Hi!
Really appreciate this blog and your awesome posts.
For someone who just now realised that their teacher forgot to teach the HL extensions, do you have any suggestions for suitable studies for the content points in the abouve post? Maybe ones that can explain all three points in all three areas?

    Really appreciate the help!

  2. Hello again,

I was just wondering if it is possible that Research Methods could come up for animal research – just checking

      Hi Shinozaki,
No – research methods won’t be asked about animal research. This is not part of the extension topic for the biological approach.
      Thanks,
      Travis.

      1. Hi Mr Dixon,
I have the same question as Shinozaki.
        In the syllabus it says
        “relevant to ALL topics:
        – the contribution of research methods used in the biological approach to understanding human behaviour”;
As well as ethics (which you already covered in this post).
Thus, does the “all” refer to HL topics as well?

No, the research methods are part of the cog and soc-cult extensions (as per the bullet points) but not the biological extension.

Not for the biological approach extension, but you have to know research methods for the cognitive and sociocultural extensions.

          1. Thank you Sir!! The syllabus says that HL questions are formulated from the topic and/or content headings. Thus do I need to find a minimum of 2 animal studies for genetic similarity, one evolutionary behaviour, one pheromone etc?

No, this means the topic or content heading of the HL extensions, not of the core topics/contents. Confusing I know.

  3. My teacher told me that for animal research ERQ, we could answer with one animal research study and one human study. How does that work?

  4. Hi I am wondering if the HL – animal research teacher’s pack has all ERQ answered.
I need ready made samples to show my students how to construct their essay
