  1. Hi Travis,

Could the students be asked, ‘Discuss the use of one method used in the study of the positive effects of digital technology on cognitive processes’ ? Or can they only be asked an ERQ on research methods for the ‘effects of digital technology on cognitive processes’ (not specifically positive or negative effects)?

My understanding is that it would be the latter: use of research methods for the effects of digital technology on cognitive processes.

  2. Hi Travis,

I was wondering if the following question “discuss the positive and negative effects of modern technology on one or more cognitive processes” can be split up into “just positive effects” or “just negative effects” in the November 2019 exams?
Secondly, we were wondering if the following question “discuss positive and/or negative effects of digital technology on emotion and cognition” can be asked in the November 2019 exams as we have been advised by our psychology teacher that “effects of digital technology on emotion and cognition” will not be asked about?

      Hi SL,

I’ll preface all of the following answers by saying there is some uncertainty with the exam questions and so these are my thoughts only, but not definitive answers (because we don’t have them):
      (1) I would expect that the question should be phrased as “positive and/or negative effects.” I think it would be unfair to ask for just positive or negative, since they are combined in the IB Psych official guide (pg. 31)
      (2) It’s possible the topic “emotion and cognition” could be asked about in the exams. However, I think it is very unlikely that they will because this would be a very convoluted and difficult question to answer.

      I hope this helps,
      Mr Dixon

  3. Hi, I found that some website separated DT & Memory and DT & Decision/cognition. May I know if the same studies can be used for both topics?

Any study on digital technology and memory is also relevant for digital technology and cognition.

In our revision textbook, I tried to focus only on working memory, since this can be applied most topics (and it’s the most commonly studied).

  4. Do we need to learn a study on the positive effects of modern technology on cognitive processes, or would having two study on the negative effects be okay for the exam?

The question SHOULD be phrased “and/or” meaning you could use both positive and negative, or one or the other. With emotion and cognition, you just need to be able to explain (or discuss for an essay) one effect, positive or negative.
