When teaching essay writing on theories I teach students to use my own\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color:#ff0000\">&#8220;Let&#8217;s make a D.E.A.L&#8221;<\/span><\/strong> strategy and not TEACUP.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#ff0000\"><strong>D.E.A.L<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"color:#ff0000\">D<\/span>escribe the theory<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"color:#ff0000\">E<\/span>xplain the Evidence<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"color:#ff0000\">A<\/span>pplications of the theory<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"color:#ff0000\">L<\/span>imitations<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you throw in a quick introduction and conclusion, you&#8217;ve got yourself an awesome essay.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Example &#8220;Let&#8217;s Make a D.E.A.L&#8221; Essay Plan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Evaluate social identity theory.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Introduction<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Description<\/strong> of SIT, including things like social comparison, the self-esteem hypothesis, etc<\/li>\n<li><strong>Explain evidence<\/strong> #1: Minimal group study<\/li>\n<li><strong>Explain evidence<\/strong> #2: Cohen&#8217;s college sports teams<\/li>\n<li><strong>Application<\/strong>: Can explain prejudice and discrimination between groups<\/li>\n<li><strong>Limitations:\u00a0<\/strong>It overlooks cultural and biological factors<\/li>\n<li><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff;color:#3d596d\">You can see that this structure of essay slightly adjusts my -argument &#8211; evidence &#8211; counter-argument structure, but all the elements are still there. This essay is something that most IB students have the potential to be able to achieve.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<blockquote><p>We&#8217;re not just learning how to evaluate <strong><em>research<\/em> <\/strong>in psychology, we&#8217;re learning how to evaluate <strong><em>arguments<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Why only three?<\/h2>\n<p>We don&#8217;t need any more and the other recommended frameworks encourage memorization of evaluation, rather than students independently devising their own critical reflections. These three are also important because:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We need evidence because the ability to support an explanation with evidence is a transferable skill and one that will prepare students for life.<\/li>\n<li>We need applications because if students can&#8217;t use what we teach them in school then why the *%$ are we teaching it?<\/li>\n<li>We need limitations because we want our students to learn how to self-reflect on their own understanding of things and to find the holes in their own arguments, as opposed to blindly touting beliefs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>As with anything I do in my teaching, I&#8217;m about doing less and doing it better.
