{"id":5519,"date":"2017-07-21T03:31:15","date_gmt":"2017-07-21T03:31:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ibpsych.themantic-education.com\/?p=5519"},"modified":"2017-07-21T03:31:15","modified_gmt":"2017-07-21T03:31:15","slug":"lesson-idea-introducing-researcher-bias","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.themantic-education.com\/ibpsych\/2017\/07\/21\/lesson-idea-introducing-researcher-bias\/","title":{"rendered":"Lesson Idea: Introducing Researcher Bias"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Overview<\/h2>\n<p>This lesson works well in the introductory unit after students have been introduced to the idea of the scientific approach in psychology (see other lesson idea <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themantic-education.com\/ibpsych\/2017\/07\/20\/lesson-idea-intro-to-the-scientific-method-in-psychology\/\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2>Aim<\/h2>\n<p>The aim of this lesson is to introduce students to the process of thinking critically about research methodology and how researcher bias may influence &#8220;research.&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Hook<\/h2>\n<p>The following video produced by Beldent chewing gum leads viewers to make certain claims about the benefits of chewing gum.<\/p>\n<p>In pairs or groups of three, students should watch the following video which is an advertisement created by Beldent chewing gum (the sound doesn&#8217;t matter so they don&#8217;t need earphones). While they&#8217;re watching the video, they should try to answer this question:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>What conclusions can you to make about chewing gum from this study? (in other words, What does this study show about chewing gum?)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n[youtube https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1lM49slVLkU]\n<p>After they&#8217;ve watched the video they should discuss with their group members and write down notes in their workbooks.<\/p>\n<p>A class discussion can follow after everyone has finished.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Activity<\/h2>\n<p>Pose these questions to students to consider and discuss in groups before sharing as a class:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Are you convinced by this &#8220;study&#8221; that chewing gum will have the effect Beldent claims?<\/li>\n<li>What are some of the ways the &#8220;researchers&#8221; might have been biased?\n<ul>\n<li>Hint: think about the types of questions they asked, the people they used, the situation, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Is this study &#8220;credible?&#8221; Why, or why not?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h1>Extension<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li>What was the independent variable in this experiment?<\/li>\n<li>What was the dependent variable in this experiment?<\/li>\n<li>State the aim of this\u00a0experiment.
