{"id":4773,"date":"2017-07-03T03:11:21","date_gmt":"2017-07-03T03:11:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ibpsych.themantic-education.com\/?p=4773"},"modified":"2017-07-03T03:11:21","modified_gmt":"2017-07-03T03:11:21","slug":"what-does-breadth-or-depth-mean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.themantic-education.com\/ibpsych\/2017\/07\/03\/what-does-breadth-or-depth-mean\/","title":{"rendered":"What does &#8220;breadth or depth&#8221; mean?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This post accompanies my other post about <a href=\"\/2017\/07\/03\/5-reasons-why-i-think-depth-is-better-than-breadth-in-ib-psychology\/\">why I think it&#8217;s better to aim for depth over breadth<\/a> in IB Psychology.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>What is depth?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Depth refers to studying a topic by looking at only one or two examples.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Examples<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Studying &#8220;Biases in thinking and decision making&#8221; by focusing only one on example, e.g., confirmation bias.<\/li>\n<li>Studying the effects of one hormone on one behaviour (e.g. cortisol on memory).<\/li>\n<li>Studying the effects of one cultural dimension on behaviour.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>What is breadth?<\/h2>\n<p>Breadth\u00a0refers to looking at multiple examples and\/or a wide range of research relevant to a topic.<\/p>\n<h2>Examples<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Studying three different types of biases in thinking and decision making, e.g. confirmation bias, optimism bias and illusory correlations.<\/li>\n<li>Studying three effects of one hormone (e.g. testosterone&#8217;s role in aggression, competition and attraction) or the effects of three hormones.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The IB Psychology course has been designed to encourage breadth or depth, but I think it&#8217;s always better to aim for depth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This post accompanies my other post about why I think it&#8217;s better to aim for depth over breadth in IB Psychology.
