Notice how they don&#8217;t ask for an example even though you need one.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"practice\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Practice SAQs<\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">IB Version<\/h3>\n<p>Based on the learning objectives, this is how the IB might phrase SAQs for the cognitive topics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Anchoring bias:\u00a0<\/strong>Describe the role of anchoring bias in decision-making.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Classical conditioning:\u00a0<\/strong>Describe the process of classical conditioning and its role in behaviour.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cognitive load theory:\u00a0<\/strong>Explain the role of cognitive load theory in understanding human cognition.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cognitive models:\u00a0<\/strong>Explain the role of one cognitive model is understanding one cognitive process.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Confirmation bias: <\/strong>Describe the role of confirmation bias in decision-making.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dual processing theory:\u00a0<\/strong>Explain the role of dual processing theory in understanding decision-making.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Operant conditioning:\u00a0<\/strong>Describe the process of operant conditioning and its role in behaviour.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Schema theory:\u00a0<\/strong>Describe the role of schema theory in understanding one cognitive process or behaviour.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Mr Dixon&#8217;s Version<\/h3>\n<p>You can see how the IB loves the phrase &#8220;the role of.&#8221; Personally, I don&#8217;t like it. I find it too abstract. So here&#8217;s how I&#8217;d phrase SAQs for each of these topics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Anchoring bias:\u00a0<\/strong>Explain one effect of anchoring bias on decision-making.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Classical conditioning:\u00a0<\/strong>Describe the process of classical conditioning and its influence on human behaviour.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cognitive load theory:\u00a0<\/strong>Describe cognitive load theory.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cognitive models: <\/strong>Describe one model of one cognitive process.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Confirmation bias: <\/strong>Explain one effect of confirmation bias on decision-making.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dual processing theory:\u00a0<\/strong>Describe dual processing theory.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Operant conditioning:\u00a0<\/strong>Describe the process of operant conditioning and its influence on human behaviour.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Schema theory:\u00a0<\/strong>Describe schema theory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Remember you <strong>must <\/strong>include an example in your answer. That could be a real or hypothetical situation or study. Hopefully the IB will add a phrase in the question to make this clear, but currently the specimen papers do not.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Teacher tip: <\/strong>To make the questions clearer, you could add the following phrase to each question:\u00a0 &#8220;Use one example to support your answer.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"revision\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Two Step Revision Method<\/h2>\n<p>The following two-step method can be used for all SAQ topics in the three approaches.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What is&#8230;?<\/li>\n<li>How and why does&#8230;?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>What is&#8230;?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Simply put this phrase in front of every topic:<\/p>\n<p>What is&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Anchoring bias?<\/li>\n<li>Classical conditioning?<\/li>\n<li>Cognitive load theory?<\/li>\n<li>(One) Cognitive model<del>s<\/del>?<\/li>\n<li>Confirmation bias?<\/li>\n<li>Dual processing theory?<\/li>\n<li>Operant conditioning?<\/li>\n<li>Schema theory?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you can define or summarise each of the topics in 1-2 sentences then you&#8217;re ready for Phase 2: How and why&#8230;?<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>How and Why&#8230;?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s not enough to define each key term. You have to\u00a0<em>explain\u00a0<\/em>them. What you&#8217;re explaining depends on what type of topic it is. All the SAQ topics fall into three categories:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Cause-effect<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Theories\/models<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Research\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<blockquote><p>You can read more about the three types of SAQs in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.themantic-education.com\/ibpsych\/2026\/02\/17\/three-types-of-saqs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> this blog post.<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Cause-Effect:\u00a0<\/strong>For these topics you need to explain how and why something is influencing cognition or behaviour.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Anchoring bias<\/strong>: How and why does anchoring bias influence decision making?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Confirmation bias<\/strong>: How and why does confirmation bias influence decision making?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Classical conditioning<\/strong>: How and why does classical conditioning influence behaviour?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Operant conditioning<\/strong>:\u00a0How and why does operant conditioning influence behaviour?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Theories\/Models:\u00a0<\/strong>For these topics you need to be summarise how the theory or model explains cognition or behaviour.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cognitive load theory<\/strong>: How does cognitive load theory explain one cognitive process?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cognitive models<\/strong>: How does one cognitive model explain one cognitive process?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dual processing theory<\/strong>: How does dual processing theory explain decision-making?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Schema theory<\/strong>: How does schema theory explain one cognitive process?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Research:\u00a0<\/strong>Interestingly, there are no research topics in the cognitive approach.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"some\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Some Examples<\/h2>\n<p>The following examples are provided to give you a general understanding of the kinds of topics you could write about.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Anchoring bias:\u00a0<\/strong>The effect of anchoring bias on consumer decision-making.* For example price anchoring.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Classical conditioning: <\/strong>Classical conditioning of fear responses, like Little Albert.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cognitive load theory:\u00a0<\/strong>How cognitive load theory helps us understand the best conditions for learning.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cognitive models: <\/strong>How the multi-store model explains the formation and storage of memories.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Confirmation bias: <\/strong>How confirmation bias can influence stereotype formation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dual processing theory:\u00a0<\/strong>How dual processing theory can explain cognitive biases (e.g. anchoring bias).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Operant conditioning:\u00a0<\/strong>Operant conditioning and its use in classroom behaviour management.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Schema theory:\u00a0<\/strong>How schema theory explains memory formation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>*Consumer decision-making is what people decide to spend their money on.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"study\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Study Tips<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>T-REX SAQs<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Topic <em>plus\u00a0<\/em>Example<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>T-REX:\u00a0<\/strong>This acronym can help plan your answers ahead of time. You can read more about it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themantic-education.com\/ibpsych\/2025\/02\/22\/the-t-rex-saq\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Topic <em>plus <\/em>Example: <\/strong>For each topic you need to explain the topic <em><strong>and <\/strong><\/em>have a supporting example. This could be &#8220;a research study or a real or hypothetical situation.&#8221; For some topics, it can get a bit blurry what&#8217;s your example and what&#8217;s your topic. You could use a two column table for your study notes &#8211; one side the topic and the other side the example you plan to use.
