But there haven&#8217;t been many studies that show exactly\u00a0<em>how\u00a0<\/em>testosterone may cause aggressive behaviours.<\/p>\n<p>The amygdala is a part of the brain associated with emotional response and it prepares our body for fight or flight.\u00a0Goetz et al hypothesized that testosterone might influence the activity (or reactivity) of the amygdala, much like <a href=\"https:\/\/101psych.com\/2016\/10\/11\/serotonin-and-violence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other research<\/a> has shown serotonin does.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Methodology<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The study used 16 healthy young men who were tested over two days. The design was a repeated measures design as all 16 men participated in both conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers made sure that all the participants base-line testosterone levels were the same before the experiment began. In the treatment condition of the experiment they were given a dose of testosterone. The control condition received a placebo.<\/p>\n<p>After the treatment\/placebo they were placed in an <a href=\"https:\/\/101psych.com\/2016\/10\/22\/brain-imaging-all-about-fmri\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fMRI scanner<\/a>\u00a0and their brain activity was measured while they saw images of faces expressing different emotions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Results<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The results showed that in the increased testosterone condition the <strong>reactivity*<\/strong> of the amygdala was higher when participants were shown the angry face.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Critical Thinking Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color:#ff0000\">How might testosterone influence our\u00a0behaviour?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#ff0000\">What are the limitations in using this study to explain aggression?
