{"id":14414,"date":"2021-10-12T10:19:43","date_gmt":"2021-10-12T01:19:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themantic-education.com\/ibpsych\/?p=14414"},"modified":"2021-10-12T10:24:24","modified_gmt":"2021-10-12T01:24:24","slug":"how-to-explain-if-further-considerations-could-be-applied-in-paper-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.themantic-education.com\/ibpsych\/2021\/10\/12\/how-to-explain-if-further-considerations-could-be-applied-in-paper-3\/","title":{"rendered":"How to &#8220;explain if further considerations could be applied&#8221; in Paper 3."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The following has been adapted from our IB revision textbook, now available as an <a href=\"https:\/\/store.themantic-education.com\/collections\/new-products\/products\/ib-psychology-a-revision-guide-ebook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online textbook<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>In the new IB Psychology Paper 3, you may be asked to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themantic-education.com\/ibpsych\/2021\/10\/12\/how-to-describe-the-ethical-considerations-that-were-applied-in-the-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">describe the ethical considerations that were applied in the study<\/a>\u00a0 and &#8220;explain if further considerations could be applied.&#8221; This question is a little misleading, so let&#8217;s look at how you can score full marks if this question comes up.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The most important thing to know about Question 2 in Paper 3 is that it&#8217;s worth 6 marks and requires you to write about 6 different ethical considerations. The question is broken into two parts, so write about 3 considerations in response to each part.<\/p>\n<p>The first part of this question should be the easiest to answer (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.themantic-education.com\/ibpsych\/2021\/10\/12\/how-to-describe-the-ethical-considerations-that-were-applied-in-the-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">read how<\/a>). The second part is a bit more difficult. Firstly, this question should say explain <em>how\u00a0<\/em>further considerations could be applied, not <em>if <\/em>they could. Therefore, you <strong>must <\/strong>think of three additional considerations that were not mentioned in the stimulus.\u00a0 The &#8220;considerations&#8221; mostly refers to the common guidelines provided by ethics committees of various countries. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Informed consent (and parental consent)<\/li>\n<li>Debriefing<\/li>\n<li>Anonymity<\/li>\n<li>Right to withdraw<\/li>\n<li>Any use of deception is justified<\/li>\n<li>Approval from an ethics review board<\/li>\n<li>Coercion (is there any pressure to participate?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>These considerations all relate to the golden rule of ethics in psychology &#8211; &#8220;do no harm.&#8221; The term for this is <strong>beneficence<\/strong> (from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themantic-education.com\/ibpsych\/2019\/01\/12\/ethical-considerations-the-belmont-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Belmont Report)<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Read more:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.themantic-education.com\/ibpsych\/2021\/10\/12\/how-to-describe-the-ethical-considerations-that-were-applied-in-the-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How to \u201cdescribe the ethical considerations that were applied in the study.\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.themantic-education.com\/ibpsych\/2019\/02\/08\/lesson-idea-ethics-of-applying-findings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lesson Idea: Ethics of applying findings<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.themantic-education.com\/ibpsych\/2019\/02\/08\/lesson-reportingfindings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lesson Idea: Ethics of reporting findings<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Example<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The May 2019 Paper 3 had three considerations that were applied. These three should have been described for the first part of the question. They were (i) informed consent, (ii) debriefing and (iii) beneficence &#8211; the procedures were harmless. Three considerations that were applied are in this paragraph. What additional three could be applied?<\/p><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Tip<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If you&#8217;re a student of mine I want you to clearly label your answer with two headings that distinguish the two parts to the question (Applied Ethics and Further Ethics would be good headings). Then I would\u00a0<em>love\u00a0<\/em>to see six distinct paragraphs &#8211; one for each consideration. This will help me mark your work and will also help you ensure you&#8217;ve hit all six points.<\/p>\n<p>Revise using flashcards to review the considerations and use practice exams (see below) to try applying this information in response to stimulus papers.
