{"id":14400,"date":"2021-10-12T09:59:16","date_gmt":"2021-10-12T00:59:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themantic-education.com\/ibpsych\/?p=14400"},"modified":"2021-10-12T10:23:57","modified_gmt":"2021-10-12T01:23:57","slug":"how-to-describe-the-ethical-considerations-that-were-applied-in-the-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.themantic-education.com\/ibpsych\/2021\/10\/12\/how-to-describe-the-ethical-considerations-that-were-applied-in-the-study\/","title":{"rendered":"How to &#8220;describe the ethical considerations that were applied in the study.&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The following has been adapted from our IB revision textbook, now available as an <a href=\"https:\/\/store.themantic-education.com\/collections\/new-products\/products\/ib-psychology-a-revision-guide-ebook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online textbook<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>In the new IB Psychology Paper 3, you may be asked to &#8220;describe the ethical considerations that were applied in the study.&#8221; This post explains how.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The most important thing to know about Question 2 in Paper 3 is that it&#8217;s worth 6 marks and requires you to write about 6 different ethical considerations. The question is broken into two parts, so write about 3 considerations in response to each part.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;ethical considerations&#8221; mainly refer to the common guidelines provided by ethics committees of various countries. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Informed consent (and parental consent)<\/li>\n<li>Debriefing<\/li>\n<li>Anonymity<\/li>\n<li>Right to withdraw<\/li>\n<li>Approval from an ethics review board<\/li>\n<li>Any use of deception is justified (and rectified in debriefing)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These considerations all relate to the golden rule of ethics in psychology &#8211; &#8220;do no harm.&#8221; The term for this is <strong>beneficence<\/strong> (from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themantic-education.com\/ibpsych\/2019\/01\/12\/ethical-considerations-the-belmont-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Belmont Report)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.themantic-education.com\/ibpsych\/2019\/02\/08\/lesson-idea-ethics-of-applying-findings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lesson Idea: Ethics of applying findings<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.themantic-education.com\/ibpsych\/2019\/02\/08\/lesson-reportingfindings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lesson Idea: Ethics of reporting findings<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Tips<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>You\u00a0<em>must <\/em>describe\u00a0<strong>three<\/strong> ethical considerations that were applied in the study. Look\u00a0<em>very\u00a0<\/em>carefully at the summary of the study you&#8217;re given. There will definitely be three relevant points to make. Here&#8217;s one paragraph from the May 2019 exam. The debriefing is stated obviously whereas the second considerations is a little harder to find and the third is <em>really\u00a0<\/em>difficult and the third one almost impossible. (1) <\/em><em>The participants were debriefed after they had completed the study.&#8221; (2)\u00a0<\/em><em>The researchers gave the participants a consent form to sign before the start of the study, in line with ethical guidelines in psychological research.
