I&#8217;ll suggest some good studies that go with those theories.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We always think about the IA based on the key study being replicated. But since the most important thing is the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">background theory or model, <\/span>maybe that&#8217;s a better place to start.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The Five Best Theories<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In examining the IA, these are the theories (or models) that are consistently used effectively in top-scoring IAs. That&#8217;s not to say you can&#8217;t do well with other theories. Use these to choose one that you think is interesting. You can find more details about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themantic-education.com\/ibpsych\/2019\/11\/06\/key-studies-for-the-ia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the recommended studies on this blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Don&#8217;t care? Then I recommend Schema Theory and Bransford and Johnson. It&#8217;s the easiest for multiple reasons.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Dual processing model (Kahnemann and Tverskey)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This is a model of thinking and decision making that posits we have two main systems of thinking: system one (fast) and system two (slow). Relying on system one can lead to cognitive biases, such as the anchoring effect. You need to understand how a theory explains that process.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Relevant studies:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Anchor effect<\/li>\n<li>Availability heuristic<\/li>\n<li>Effort hueristic<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Levels of processing model (Craik and Lockhart)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This model posits that we process information based on different levels (deep or shallow) and this influences memory. Information processed deeply leads to better memory than shallow processing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Relevant studies:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Levels of processing (Craik and Tulving)<\/li>\n<li>The pen is mightier than the sword<\/li>\n<li>Fortune favours the bold (Font and memory)<\/li>\n<li>Self-referent effect (by Rogers, Kuiper and Kirker, 1977)(<a href=\"https:\/\/pdfs.semanticscholar.org\/1bff\/3ea36308a106de9e04b54e83bd1de3e24805.pdf?fbclid=IwAR053185ewysnlw-CPj_0oFJWBdk7_DI2zxVZ6HhrwwPRIDixCK8RNdZXEw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Full Study<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Multi-store model (Atkinson and Shiffrin)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This model of memory describes how memories are formed. Information travels between three stores (sensory to short-term to long-term) and these stores differ in terms of duration and capacity. It&#8217;s a troubled study from start to finish and is not good for the IA.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This theory posits that our mind organizes our knowledge and memories into clusters called schemas. These schemas can influence how we process, interpret and remember information.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Relevant studies:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Laundry study<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Working memory model (Baddeley and Hitch)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This model elaborated on the short-term store of memory proposed by the MSM. It describes how information in our working memory is processed. The central executive controls the flow of information into our slaves systems &#8211; the visuospatial sketchpad (visual working memory) and our phonological loop (auditory working memory). If one slave system is overwhelmed it can affect our working memory.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Relevant studies:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The effects of music (with lyrics) on cognition (Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5671572\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Articulatory suppression (speaking while trying to remember something reduces memory)<\/li>\n<li>Visual noise and working memory<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Got a good recommendation?
