I will freely admit, that I can&#8217;t explain it any clearer than what&#8217;s included on <a href=\"https:\/\/ibpublishing.ibo.org\/d_3_psych_gui_1702_1\/apps\/dpapp\/guidance.html?doc=d_3_psych_gui_1702_1_e&amp;part=1&amp;chapter=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this excellent post on MyIB<\/a>. Perhaps the most value I can offer is to make people aware of this resource.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Before we look at\u00a0<em>what\u00a0<\/em>you have to do, it&#8217;s important to understand\u00a0<em>why\u00a0<\/em>you&#8217;re doing it. You&#8217;ve conducted an experiment and now you want to see if there are differences between the conditions. If you&#8217;ve already tried to apply descriptive statistics to your data, make sure you have the following in your report:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Raw data table in appendices and\u00a0<em><strong>not\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>in the body of the report<\/li>\n<li><strong>One<\/strong> measure of central tendency (mean, median or mode)<\/li>\n<li><strong>One<\/strong> measure of dispersion (SD, range, IQR or variation ratio).<\/li>\n<li>Results clearly summarized in a paragraph (a table is advisable, too)<\/li>\n<li>You\u00a0<strong>have not\u00a0<\/strong>accepted\/rejected any of your hypotheses based on the descriptive statistics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Descriptive statistics\u00a0<\/strong>in IB Psychology refers to <strong>two<\/strong> calculations you need to apply to your data. You need to apply one each of the following two calculations:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Average<\/strong> (aka central tendency). e.g Mean OR median OR mode<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dispersion<\/strong> (aka spread), e.g.\u00a0 standard deviation OR range OR interquartile range OR variation ratio.*<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<blockquote><p>*The IB has published some <em>really\u00a0<\/em>useful information on the MyIB Psychology page in the Programme Resource Center. Visit this <a href=\"https:\/\/ibpublishing.ibo.org\/d_3_psych_gui_1702_1\/apps\/dpapp\/guidance.html?doc=d_3_psych_gui_1702_1_e&amp;part=1&amp;chapter=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">link<\/a> or go through the &#8220;Additional Guidance&#8221; page in the homepage. This is where they say to use variation ratio for nominal data.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>MEAN, MEDIAN OR MODE?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Use the mean if&#8230;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8230;you have interval or ratio data <em><strong>without<\/strong><\/em> outliers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Use the median if&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8230;you have ordinal data,<\/li>\n<li>Or&#8230;you have interval or ratio data <em><strong>with<\/strong><\/em> outliers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Use the mode if&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8230;you have nominal data<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/h6Bf07DkfG0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Don&#8217;t know your type of data?<\/h2>\n<p>Your choice of descriptive statistics depends on your <strong>level of measurement.<\/strong> There are four possible levels of measurement that your data will be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Nominal<\/strong>: your results can&#8217;t be ordered from highest to lowest, only put in groups.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ordinal<\/strong>: your results can be ordered from highest to lowest, but there is not an equal interval between them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Interval<\/strong>: your results can be ordered from highest to lowest, they have equal intervals but there&#8217;s no true zero value.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ratio<\/strong>: your results can be ordered, have equal intervals and there&#8217;s a true zero.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The most common types of results in IB Psychology IAs are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Likert scale ratings (asking participants to rate something on a scale, e.g. 1-7)<\/li>\n<li>Memory tests<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/ibpublishing.ibo.org\/d_3_psych_gui_1702_1\/apps\/dpapp\/guidance.html?doc=d_3_psych_gui_1702_1_e&amp;part=1&amp;chapter=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IB&#8217;s guidance<\/a>, likert scales are ordinal data and memory tests are ratio data. Speed and time are also examples of ratio data. I only present materials like this post after they&#8217;ve tried it for themselves.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>DISPERSION<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Your measure of dispersion will depend on the average you calculated above and your type of data.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mode = <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Variation_ratio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">variation ratio<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Median with ordinal data = <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Range_(statistics)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">range*<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Median with interval\/ratio data\u00a0<em>with\u00a0<\/em>outliers =\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.socscistatistics.com\/descriptive\/interquartilerange\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interquartile range <\/a><\/li>\n<li>Mean = <a href=\"https:\/\/www.socscistatistics.com\/descriptive\/variance\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">standard deviation\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There&#8217;s no need to explain how or why you chose the descriptive stats to use or the level of measurement of your data. It&#8217;s enough to write them in a summary. It&#8217;s also recommended to put them in a clearly labelled table since this is common practice in psychology.<\/p>\n<p>*<em>The IB&#8217;s official website on MyIB says median and range is best for ordinal data. However, IA examiners look for IQR for ordinal data. If you have ordinal data, therefore, use IQR.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Two decimal places\u00a0<\/strong>is specific enough for descriptive calculations. Do not go to 7 or 8 decimal places like many students do. This is from my example IA included in the <a href=\"https:\/\/store.themantic-education.com\/collections\/support-packs\/products\/ib-psychology-teacher-support-pack-internal-assessment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IA support pack<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>What to do with outliers?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Sometimes you have extreme values that will skew your mean. For example, someone in your Loftus and Palmer experiment guess 300mph when everyone else was around 60mph. You have two choices:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Keep it!<\/li>\n<li>Drop it!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You need to decide what to do with outliers.
