These are important guidelines that ensure the human and animal rights to subjects involved in psychological research.<\/p>\n<p><em>Considerations when studying <strong>humans<\/strong>:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Informed consent (or\u00a0retrospective consent): participants sign a form that states they agree to participate in the study.<\/li>\n<li>Deception: this means to lead people to believe something that is not true. The nature, severity and purpose of the deception are important factors for ethical review boards to consider.<\/li>\n<li>Debriefing: telling the participants after the study has concluded what the purpose was and what the results were.<\/li>\n<li>Anonymity: removing names from data and not publishing any participant&#8217;s name in the final report.<\/li>\n<li>The right to withdrawal: participants are able to leave the experiment at any time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>It is important to note that there are other ethical issues\u00a0involved in research studies and many cannot be categorized under one piece of terminology.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Here is a video that outlines these, and more, from the BPS.<\/em><\/p>\n[youtube https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9pOuh8S8cIg]\n<em>Considerations when studying <strong>animals<\/strong>:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Minimise harm and suffering<\/li>\n<li>Justifiable reason for research<\/li>\n<li>Euthanising to end suffering<\/li>\n<li>Animal welfare<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Not that you&#8217;ll ever need to read it, but here you can find the entire <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apa.org\/ethics\/code\/principles.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">American Psychological Associations (APA) Ethical Guidelines.<\/a>\u00a0It will give you an idea of just how important these considerations are in modern psychological research.
