{"id":11754,"date":"2019-02-08T09:28:51","date_gmt":"2019-02-08T00:28:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themantic-education.com\/ibpsych\/?p=11754"},"modified":"2019-03-21T10:59:10","modified_gmt":"2019-03-21T01:59:10","slug":"lesson-reportingfindings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.themantic-education.com\/ibpsych\/2019\/02\/08\/lesson-reportingfindings\/","title":{"rendered":"Lesson Idea: Ethics of reporting findings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the new IB Psychology Paper 3, you may be asked to explain the ethical considerations involved in reporting findings of the study.<\/p>\n<p>The most obvious consideration (or guideline) relevant to this question is <strong>a<\/strong><strong>nonymity &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>not revealing participants names in the final report.\u00a0Other relevant considerations or guidelines may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Informed consent (avoiding deception)<\/li>\n<li>Debriefing<\/li>\n<li>Confidentiality (not telling people you&#8217;re involved in the study &#8211; similar to anonymity)<\/li>\n<li>Right to withdraw<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Alternatively, you might explain a general consideration related to <strong>beneficence<\/strong> &#8211; avoiding harm of participants (from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themantic-education.com\/ibpsych\/2019\/01\/12\/ethical-considerations-the-belmont-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Belmont Report)<\/a>. You could do this by explaining how reporting the results may cause harm (psychological, emotional or physical) to participants and\/or how the researchers could avoid this.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Activity<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Aim:\u00a0<\/strong>This practice activity is designed to help you understand the ethical considerations related to .reporting results.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Instructions:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Read the following summaries of studies.<\/li>\n<li>Identify two ethical considerations that are relevant to the reporting of these results.<\/li>\n<li>Try to explain\u00a0<em>how\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0<em>why\u00a0<\/em>these ethical considerations are relevant.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<blockquote><p><em>To explain an ethical consideration in reporting results means you have to explain how the reporting of the result might have a negative effect on others and\/or how the researchers could use the guidelines to reduce this negative effect.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Brain damage affects decision-making:\u00a0<\/strong>Bechara et al. found that people with damage to their ventromedial prefrontal cortices (vmPFCs) made impulsive decisions and could not think about the consequences of their actions. antidepressant<\/strong> <strong>medication<\/strong>: One review of studies conducted on the effectiveness of antidepressant medication to treat depression found that &#8220;&#8230;antidepressants were not clinically significant for mild, moderate and severe depression&#8230;&#8221; (Kirsch, et al. 2008 as cited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3736946\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Race and IQ: <\/strong>In the controversial book, <em>The Bell Curve,\u00a0<\/em>they reference a\u00a0study that found differences in average IQs between different races (White, Black, Asian, Latino and Jewish)\u00a0(As referenced in <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.udel.edu\/educ\/gottfredson\/30years\/Rushton-Jensen30years.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this article<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Social Media and Depression:\u00a0<\/strong>In their original article, McCrae et al. reported that in their study their results showed &#8220;&#8230;a small but statistically significant correlation between social media use and depressive symptoms in young people (<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s40894-017-0053-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Link<\/a>).&#8221;
