As with other similar lesson ideas, it tries to make the abstract more concrete by giving real-life examples.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>The Activity<\/h2>\n<p>Students are to read the following summary of Due, a fictionary Vietnamese War vetern. After reading the summary, they are to work together to be able to explain why Due is having these symptoms (see below in red). He still suffers from intrusive memories of some events, like the time he and his friends were caught by American soldiers and three of his friends and comrades were executed. Sometimes the memory of this event comes into Due\u2019s mind and he can\u2019t control it. Like, he&#8217;ll be just sitting and play chess with his friend and then suddenly the memories come back, or he will be in the grocery store and starts remembering that day.<\/p>\n<p>Due underwent an fMRI scan and it was revealed that he has low function in his ventromedial prefrontal cortex, which is a common finding in people with PTSD.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><em>If we consider that the prefrontal cortex plays an important role in executive cognitive functions (e.g. controlling information in our working memory), how could you explain Due&#8217;s intrusive memories?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_11326\" style=\"width: 644px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11326\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11326\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.themantic-education.com\/ibpsych\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/08\/Cortical_midline_structures.png?resize=634%2C532&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Cortical_midline_structures\" width=\"634\" height=\"532\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.themantic-education.com\/ibpsych\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/08\/Cortical_midline_structures.png?w=634&amp;ssl=1 634w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.themantic-education.com\/ibpsych\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/08\/Cortical_midline_structures.png?resize=300%2C252&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.themantic-education.com\/ibpsych\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/08\/Cortical_midline_structures.png?resize=100%2C84&amp;ssl=1 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 634px) 100vw, 634px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11326\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The vmPFC (in yellow) is a specific part of the PFC that has been associated with PTSD symptoms.
