So a narrative <em>interview<\/em> asks questions that require participants to summarize their experiences of one or more phenomena (events) and tell this story to the researcher.<\/p>\n<p>A narrative interview\u2019s aim is to gather data on an individual\u2019s particular experiences by asking them questions designed to have the participant respond in a narrative &#8211; a summary of events that are bound together by a common theme or meaning.<\/p>\n<p>They might ask questions like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Can you tell me about your experiences of&#8230;?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Can you tell me about &#8230;.? Who was involved? What happened? How did you feel?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>How is a narrative interview conducted?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This summary from Feher, 2011 (European Journal of Homelessness) gives a good summary of how the narrative interview process works (in this case when interviewing homeless people). (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.feantsaresearch.org\/download\/ejh_2011_5-1_article-37520203045671805020.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Link to full article<\/a>)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;The narrative interview consists of three sub-sessions. In the first one the interviewer poses a single, carefully constructed, introductory, narrative question and<\/em><br \/>\n<em>then remains silent for a long period of time. In this question the interviewer orientates\u00a0<\/em><em>the interviewee by telling them what the focus of the interview is. The initial<\/em><br \/>\n<em>question could be something like: \u201cPlease tell me the story of your life\u2026 how you<\/em><br \/>\n<em>have become homeless?\u201d The interviewee is given complete freedom in their<\/em><br \/>\n<em>response, and in remembering and constructing the story that they feel best<\/em><br \/>\n<em>responds to the question. The interviewer is fully present, but does not influence<\/em><br \/>\n<em>the story-telling by asking questions. If the interviewee needs help or does not know<\/em><br \/>\n<em>how to continue, the interviewer can ask them to expand on the last event (\u201cDo you<\/em><br \/>\n<em>remember anything else about this?\u201d), or simply help them to move on by asking:<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u201cAnd what happened after that?\u201d When the story is finished (usually marked by a<\/em><br \/>\n<em>closing sentence such as \u201cThis was the story of my life\u201d), the interviewer might ask<\/em><br \/>\n<em>the interviewee to speak more about certain events that have been mentioned and<\/em><br \/>\n<em>then wait for the story to be developed without asking further questions. This subsession\u00a0<\/em><em>is called the narrative follow-up. Questions in this sub-session remain<\/em><br \/>\n<em>strictly narrative in nature&#8230;. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The third sub-session is optional.\u00a0<\/em><em>If the interviewer feels that more, non-narrative material is needed, they can conduct\u00a0<\/em><em>a second interview \u2013 this time a semi-structured, in-depth interview. This could be\u00a0<\/em><em>the case, for example, if the research requires the birth date of the respondent or\u00a0<\/em><em>more information about their family, or even if the interviewee has not spoken about\u00a0<\/em><em>certain areas of their lives that could be important, such as their childhood.&#8221; (Feher, 2011)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In summary, there are three phases to a typical narrative interview:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Narrative phase:\u00a0<\/strong>A single, carefully constructive narrative question is asked and the participant is given freedom to respond without intrusion from the research.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Narrative follow-up:\u00a0<\/strong>Additional question are asked to gather more information if necessary.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Optional second interview:\u00a0<\/strong>More structured questions are asked to reveal specific data.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<blockquote><p><em><br \/>\nYou can see <a href=\"http:\/\/Using narrative interviewing, we encouraged participants to articulate their PINs of SLEs and WPBAs by asking a series of prompts around their narratives: Can you tell me about a memorable SLE\/WPBA? What happened? Who was involved? Where did it happen? What did you do and why? How did you feel? What was the impact of that SLE\/WPBA for trainee learning? We encouraged participants to narrate their SLE\/WPBA experiences so that their views were grounded in actual lived experiences and we could understand how they made sense of those experiences, identities and relationships. Interviews continued until participants felt they had shared their experiences sufficiently. We then asked participants how they thought SLEs could be improved.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this original study <\/a>about Doctor training in the UK for a summary of questions asked in a narrative interview.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is believed that people build their schema of the world by the stories they tell, listen to and read. It\u2019s through these stories that people make sense of what is happening around them. Therefore, people will naturally communicate their experiences of the world (it is believed) through their own narratives, so questions should be asked that enable them to do this. The purpose is to see how people order the events and experiences of their life to give them meaning. By interpreting the meaning applied to participants&#8217; events, we can attempt to understand their subjective experiences.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Other strengths<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It can be used to investigate how people interpret their own individual experiences in relation to the broader social and cultural context. This is because their experiences would have been shaped to fit schema which have been accumulated through their social and cultural experiences.<\/li>\n<li>They can be used with all people because they can talk freely.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Limitations<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It results in an enormous amount of data and it can be time consuming to collect and analyse it.<\/li>\n<li>The amount and quality of data will vary depending on the verbal qualities of the participant.<\/li>\n<li>On the other hand, it might not offer much data if the person is unwilling to speak.
